NFW Special Feature: Momma Pearl

NFW Special Feature: Momma Pearl

Friend of the Week is a regular feature to introduce furry Friends in the community who need loving and caring homes.  While currently not available for adoption, Momma Pearl is fighting to get her and her pups to that point.  Consider helping Pearl towards her happily ever after.

Pearl was found as a stray on the streets of Cleveland by Animal Control.  Cold, starved, neglected, and clearly abused, Pearl was desperate.  In the short 18 months of her life, it was clear Pearl had never known a day of kindness.  But Pearl was not just fighting for her life; she was also pregnant and ready to deliver at any time.  On November 25, 2012, Pearl gave birth to 12 puppies.  Due to malnourishment, two puppies were stillborn.

In a brief bright moment, Pearl was brought into the world of animal rescue that same day when she was picked up by All Dogs’ Heaven Rescue.  They jumped into action fast, doing all they could to save Pearl and her remaining pups.  Volunteers started to tube feed the babies and get Pearl stable.  The next morning, the entire family was rushed to the veterinary office for emergency care.  Pearl was suffering from a raging uterine infection, anemia, dehydration, and malnourishment.  She was immediately placed on IV fluids and IV antibiotics.  Sadly, three of her puppies could not survive and passed on.  It was also discovered Pearl is heartworm positive.

Four Northwestern High School teens donate netbooks to Akron Children's Hospital

Four Northwestern High School teens donate netbooks to Akron Children's Hospital

Students at a small Wayne County school are doing big things.

Over the last year Rebecca Leasure, Faith Hudson, Mikaela Franks and Cortney Howman raised over $14,000 for netbooks that were donated to Akron Children's Hospital.

With the money raised, the Northwestern High School students, part of a group called "Skype 4 Life", purchased 20 computers, cases and flash drives.

The Skype 4 Life girls hopes the computers will allow long-term patients at the hospital to connect with family and friends. The girls say they are currently in the process of looking for other children's hospitals to donate to as well. They’re already working to raise more money through fundraisers and grants.

NFW Special Feature: Teddy Still Needs an Angel

NFW Special Feature: Teddy Still Needs an Angel

Friend of the Week is a regular feature to introduce furry Friends in the community who need loving and caring homes.  Teddy is very special and needs a home by Thanksgiving.  If you are interested in adopting Teddy, please fill out an adoption application at www.dogsunlimitedrescue.org.

On Monday, November 12, 2012, the Neighborhood Friend of the Week and 19 Action News brought you the heart-warming story of Teddy on television and in print.  Through our efforts, we even thought Teddy had found two potential homes, but they were not meant to be.  Today, Teddy is still looking for his angel.  He has been through so much and deserves a happily ever after.  Will you be Teddy's holiday angel?!?

Dogs Unlimited Rescue (DUR) is a wonderful rescue organization based out of Pepper Pike, Ohio.  The team at DUR takes in some of the worst cases of animals in need and never gives up on trying to find them a home.  Teddy is no exception.  Upon being rescued, Teddy had 12 untreated kidney stones that had to be removed in surgery.  Now, Teddy is adorably complimented with a cute indoor diaper.  This little guy has one final hurdle – he only has until Thanksgiving to find the guardian who will love him and understand what he has been through.
